Roquette establishes world's largest largest pea-protein facility in Portage la Prairie, Canada

Lux Take: Very Important

"The 200,000-square-foot "Plant for the Future" will process 125,000 tons of yellow peas per year to produce Nutralys, a soluble pea-protein isolate, and doubles Roquette's total capacity to 250,000 tons per year — making it the largest player in the space. The project is Roquette's largest North American investment and pushes the company's plant protein investments above €500 million for the 2015–2020 period while expanding its pea-protein presence, previously limited to facilities in France and the Netherlands, into North America. This bold capacity expansion positions Roquette to capture a large market share given that the demand for alternative, plant-based proteins will grow further in the coming years.

Farmers Business Network (FBN) announces $300 million Series G led by Fidelity Management

Deepesh Bista, Agriculture Analyst, Lux Research

Deepesh Bista, Agriculture Analyst
Lux Take: Very Important

"This funding round aims to accelerate the expansion of FBN's "Direct" and "Financial Platforms" business units, with capital used to hire staff, and bolster IP and technology that will improve the efficiency, options, and price transparency for ag input purchases. FBN itself has grown to 33,500 members over 82 million acres since 2014 and plans to add more on-farm technologies and financial services that will help finance farm operations. FBN competes against established precision ag players and will probably expand beyond its base in the U.S., Canada, and Australia as it continues to receive attention from both financial and agtech innovators.

Ekona Power receives strategic investment from Baker Hughes to advance methane pyrolysis

Jinze Dai, Ph.D., Analyst, Lux Research

Jinze Dai, Ph.D., Senior Research Associate
Lux Take: Average Importance

"After raising $3 million from BDC Capital, Ekona Power is now backed by Baker Hughes, which acquired a 20% stake in the methane pyrolysis startup. The two companies will join forces to identify suitable pilot projects and leverage Baker Hughes' expertise in turbomachinery to scale up Ekona's thermal methane pyrolysis technology. Ekona's claim that its technology can potentially produce turquoise hydrogen at costs on par with gray hydrogen rests on the bold assumption that the solid carbon produced can be sold at high prices, but an offtaker needs to be secured. Companies should recognize the value of turquoise hydrogen for regions lacking carbon capture and sequestration and renewable power but not expect major market penetration until 2030."

Composite 3D printing company Arris Composites raises $88.5 Million in Series C funding

Akshay Chaudhari, Ph.D., Analyst, Lux Research

Akshay Chaudhari, Ph.D., Analyst
Lux Take: Average Importance

"The ability of Arris Composites to combine 3D printing with conventional mass production processes is a key differentiator in the crowded composite 3D printing market. Although there has been an increase in funding for composite 3D printing companies, this funding round puts Arris far ahead of its competitors, allowing the company to further scale its global operations to meet an increasing demand for its products. Furthermore, with the planned expansion of production capacity, it is better positioned to serve emerging applications for 3D printing in the automotive and aerospace industries, exploring advanced composites for lightweighting to reduce emissions."

TenneT to trial blockchain transactions combined with agent-based battery management to simplify energy availability

Michael Sullivan, Analyst, Lux Research

Michael Sullivan, Analyst
Lux Take: Average Importance

"TenneT's project potentially streamlines access to consumer energy storage for transmission system operators (TSOs) by simplifying the many small transactions inherent in the process. In the project, be.storaged's intelligent agents, developed with the Oldenburg OFFIS Institute of Computer Science, aggregate individual consumer battery storage, while TenneT uses the Equigy Crowd Balancing Platform, which provides a blockchain-based ledger for TSOs, to make that capacity available. TSOs can then use the storage to address grid congestion. Companies should take note of this novel approach to see if it increases blockchain’s value, which so far has remained limited for the power industry despite investments and hype."

Carbon’s move to open Design Engine software hints at more openness in the 3D printing industry

Akshay Chaudhari, Ph.D., Analyst, Lux Research

Akshay Chaudhari, Ph.D., Analyst
Lux Take: Average Importance

"Although closed materials and software platforms ensure better print quality with the right specifications, 3D printing companies must ensure interoperability with other 3D printing and conventional manufacturing hardware and software, as 3D printers become more common on the shop floor. Realizing the need for openness, companies have started to open their software and materials platforms. For instance, Stratasys recently introduced GrabCAD, a software platform, and open materials options for production-scale 3D printing. Similarly, 3DMF Consortium continues to develop open specifications for 3D printing. In line with the trend, Carbon’s move is a step in the right direction, and other companies are expected to follow."
