About the Event

The energy transition is no longer a concept of the future; it’s well underway. According to International Energy Agency data, in 2023, electric vehicles made up roughly 18% of all vehicles sold; 440 GW of renewable capacity was added to the grid; and nearly 20 direct air capture facilities were removing nearly 10 ktonne of CO2 annually. At the same time, companies continued to face pressure from investors to not only decarbonize but to also deliver healthy profits. Balancing these priorities will be a key theme throughout 2024 and beyond.

Startups have thus far remained the poster child of the energy transition, developing the technologies that would one day move the world away from fossil fuels. However, the energy transition can’t rely on startups alone and must involve the incumbent energy industry. A perfect storm of regulations, subsidies, and falling costs for novel energy technologies created an environment ripe for energy companies to pilot the next generation of climate technologies. In this forum, we will:

  • Discuss expected macro-level trends in tech innovation for 2024.
  • Identify the most promising energy technologies poised to move from prototype to pilot today, taking an especially close look at the role of energy storage and alternative fuels.
  • Highlight strategies that companies should deploy to meet their decarbonization targets through panel discussions with innovators building climate tech projects.

Innovating in 2024: How to Navigate the Energy Transition

The last decade of corporate innovation can be defined as the era of “open innovation.” An era of low interest rates and high investor enthusiasm often put corporate venture capital at the heart of corporate innovation. Today, that dynamic is changing rapidly.

This presentation will discuss macro-level trends in corporate innovation and outline where corporates should be focusing their innovation in 2024 and beyond.

Taking Flight: The Future of Sustainable Aviation Fuels

Aviation is a fast-growing market for low-carbon fuels and provides new opportunities for producers to expand. But the race is on between biofuels and e-fuels, raising questions as to which will emerge as the dominant technology for sustainable aviation fuels and best unlock available feedstock, ecosystems, and infrastructure.

This presentation will delve into technology options, bottlenecks, and drivers as projects vie for market share.

Finding the Best Fit for Energy Storage

Intermittent renewable capacity is skyrocketing while dispatchable power sources like coal and gas are slowly phasing out, creating a sizable opportunity for energy storage to provide both reliability services and energy capacity to the grid. Meanwhile, innovations in energy storage have led to a diversity in technologies to address various applications.

This presentation will clarify which technologies are best fits for different applications by examining technical and economic metrics of energy storage types, plus provide expected timelines for adoption.
