LUX FORUM HOUSTON Made in America: The Energy Transition

The energy industry today is arguably more dynamic than at any other point in history. Policy changes are pushing for faster and faster decarbonization, phasing out the core product of oil and gas companies while increasing strain on our electrical grids. Geopolitical conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war have disrupted global energy markets, mostly accelerating this transition. Finally, oil and gas companies are starting to see this pressure in their day-to-day operations as activist shareholders push for change within companies and nongovernmental organizations escalate legal battles with oil and gas companies for their role in climate change.

Against this backdrop of a rapidly changing energy landscape, making the right decision at the right time is crucial. Energy companies need clear, long-term roadmaps to guide their transition away from fossil fuels without jeopardizing near-term performance. Lux understands these challenges, and in this Lux Forum, we’ll highlight key pathways for how oil and gas companies can decarbonize and drill down into specific opportunities like carbon capture and hydrogen.

Time (CDT) Session DescriptionPresenter
8:00AM – 9:00AM Networking Breakfast

9:00AM – 9:40AM
Building a Net-Zero-Emissions Oil and Gas Company
As the push from regulatory bodies and consumers to decarbonize the global economy intensifies, oil and gas companies face a radical challenge to decarbonize their operations today while planning for a future that requires significantly smaller volumes.

In this presentation, Lux will outline its net-zero strategy framework, which includes five pathways for oil and gas companies to consider pursuing to achieve net-zero within the context of today’s energy markets. Within these strategies, we will also highlight how U.S.-based companies can take advantage of regulations, technology innovation, and timing to build a promising position in the future.

9:40AM – 10:10AM The Drivers Determining the Future of Carbon
Renewable sources of carbon include recycling, biomass, and CO2 from direct air capture or biogenic point sources. These sources each have different qualities, different availability, and different prices. In short, each implies an entirely different value chain.

How do these value chains stack up against one another? Will there be one winner or a mix, and how can you switch between various sources of carbon? Lux Research will discuss the main drivers for renewable carbon and how to make sense of the evolving landscape. We’ll show which technologies constitute no-regret options in any scenario and which technologies can give a decisive advantage.

10:40AM – 11:20AM Decarbonization Client Panel: A Cross-Sector Roadmap
The chemicals industry needs to know what energy carrier it can rely on in the future. The oil and gas sector needs rapid growth in the electricity supply, and the power sector must shut down capacity to decarbonize while frantically adding emissions-free capacity at the same time.

How can these sectors coordinate to remove existing obstacles and create as smooth a transition as possible?

11:20AM – 11:50AM Hydrogen in the U.S.
Discussions about the role of hydrogen have dominated the energy conversation for much of the past two years. The energy industry has gone through several waves of hydrogen hype, but a combination of supporting policies, macroeconomic factors, and technology innovation make this wave likely to stick. However, success in the hydrogen space requires more than just identifying when the (new) hydrogen economy will emerge. What applications will drive demand for hydrogen? How will hydrogen be made, and where?

In this presentation, Lux Research will share our outlook for hydrogen in the U.S., highlighting both opportunities and pitfalls and providing our view on how U.S. energy companies should approach the space.
