Political, economic, social, and technological factors are all elevating the need for end-to-end food traceability and transparency, with the COVID-19 pandemic acting as a force multiplier. There are reasons aplenty for agrifood companies to implement traceability and transparency tools, but understanding the value of doing so is nontrivial.
Looking beyond the status quo, agrifood stakeholders have voiced three major desires when it comes to bolstering the value derived from food traceability: 1) establishing sustainability measurements and metrics, 2) forecasting supply and demand, and 3) trade facilitation.
To provide clarity to this murky subject, this report clearly defines the delivered outcomes of food traceability projects, identifies unmet needs in the incumbent traceability activities and possible technology solutions, and lays out the future directions of this space.
