The continuous rise of distributed energy resources (DERs) located behind the meter poses an opportunity to monetize electricity and energy flexibility provided by these assets. A few approaches have been emerging to leverage asset capabilities to participate in different services, which creates new revenue streams for DER owners and enables utilities to coordinate infrastructure upgrades and gain increased visualization of available assets to manage constraints and fluctuations in the power grid. DER markets offer the best long-term approach, but virtual power plants are the most established solution today.
